Common questions

The weight went down on its own

That is the automatic deload. If you miss the same lift three sessions in a row, FiveByFive drops that lift by 10% so you can build back up through the sticking point. It is part of the 5×5 method, not a bug. Run the weight back up and you will usually pass the point where you stalled.

The weight is not going up

A lift only increases once every square is filled — five sets of five on squat, bench press, overhead press, and row, and one set of five on deadlift. Any square left short holds that lift at the same weight next session. Increases are 5 lb on the upper-body lifts and squat, and 10 lb on deadlift; 2.5 kg and 5 kg in kilogram mode.

The rest-timer notification never arrived

The end-of-rest alert is a local notification, so it needs notification permission. Open your device settings, find FiveByFive, and allow notifications. Also check that Focus, Do Not Disturb, or a silent-mode schedule is not suppressing alerts. While the app is open and in the foreground the screen stays awake and the on-screen timer runs regardless of permission.

Plate math shows weights I cannot load

Plate math assumes a standard barbell and standard plates: a 45 lb bar in pound mode, a 20 kg bar in kilogram mode. Kilogram mode uses a real kilogram ladder with 2.5 kg jumps rather than converted pounds. If your gym's smallest plate is larger than the app assumes, set your working weight manually in Settings → the weight list, and round to what you can actually load.

How do I change my starting or working weights?

Settings → the working-weight list. Tap any lift and enter the weight you want to start from. This overrides the progression for that lift; the next completed session continues from your new number.

How do I switch between pounds and kilograms?

Settings → Use kilograms (kg). Switching units converts your existing weights and switches plate math to the kilogram ladder.

Do I need an account?

No. FiveByFive works completely offline and stores your training on the device. An account exists only so your workouts follow you to a second device. Sign in with Apple on iOS, with Google where it is offered, or with an email address and a password of at least eight characters.

I signed in and my workouts are missing

Check the sync status at the top of the Settings tab. If it reads that cloud sync could not connect, your local workout data is still safe on the device — the app simply could not reach the server. Confirm you have a network connection and reopen the app. If you have more than one account, make sure you signed in with the same one you used originally; each account carries its own history.

How do I get my data out?

Progress tab → the export control. It produces a CSV of your full session history. On iOS it opens the share sheet, so you can mail it to yourself or save it to Files. On the web build it downloads as fivebyfive.csv. The export is yours to keep and needs no account.

How do I start over without deleting my account?

Settings → Reset all data. It clears all weights and history on the device and returns every lift to its starting weight. This cannot be undone, so export a CSV first if you want a record.

I paid, then reinstalled — do I pay again?

No. FiveByFive is a one-time purchase with no subscription, no ads, and no paywalled lifts. Reinstall from the App Store or Play Store while signed in to the store account that bought it and it downloads at no additional charge.

Account deletion

You can delete your account and all synced workout data from inside the app: Settings → Account & Sync → Delete account. It is immediate and permanent.

If you no longer have access to the app, use the account-deletion request page and we will process it within seven days.

Your data

FiveByFive collects no analytics and uses no third-party tracking. Workout data stays on your device unless you sign in, in which case it also syncs through Supabase so a second device can read it. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what is stored and for how long.

Safety

FiveByFive is training software, not medical or coaching advice. It is not affiliated with StrongLifts or any fitness brand; 5×5 is a generic training method. Lift within your ability, and have a qualified professional check your form before loading heavy.
